We are all familiar with those speech bubbles seen in comics where the words of someone speaking are typed in. The meaning they convey together with the picture can have quite an impact! The spoken word can be a very powerful form of communication which has a significant capacity to bring about change.

The above word bubble is empty which stresses the potential of the spoken word! We may lack confidence to speak in public or even just in a group. I recall as a young man being extremely nervous about speaking in public, The thought that I might be asked to give a simple vote of thanks filled me with fear. But I learnt to rise above those fears to discover that we can all use our voice.

Of course there are different ways in which we can speak powerfully, the use of the microphone is one example. Then there is the legal power of police which enables them to speak with authority. Or consider voice resonance which enables opera singers to project their voices. But these methods good as they are do not take the place of simply using our God given ability to speak.

By speech we communicate and express ideas. Jesus of Nazareth was an expert teacher of life values, but more than this he used language to speak creatively and with authority to various conditions he encountered. He spoke to a storm with the words… “Quiet! Be still!” The disciples were filled with awe when the wind and waves obeyed him. What we speak can be a POWERFUL VOICE!
