What is it about water? The ground is parched, the soil is dry, yet as the water of life begins to flow, green suddenly appears again. The potential of growth was there, hidden away in millions of seeds, small and large. Even the dying trees burst out with fresh growth buds as they respond to the scent of living water.
For believers in Jesus Christ there is always living water available. Our Christian lives can become barren and dry, and we sense no vitality or spontaneity… our lives can become dull and empty. There is no longer that feeling of response… what is wrong?
Like parched ground, we need the life-giving flow of the Holy Spirit to activate and energize our life again. God did not give us the Holy Spirit to be a one-off experience. Like our gardens, and those beautiful plants in pots, we all need regular living water.
A certain woman in the Gospel narrative had come to a well to draw water. She met Jesus and found herself engaged in conversation with this stranger who seemed to know all about her life. As they talked, he offered her living water which he said would be a spring of water within her. Of course, he was referring to the gift of the Holy Spirit which would be made available to all believers.
The life within God’s Holy Spirit doesn’t change… it is always available, to bring about the Lord’s activity in our lives!
