Most of us would have seen those lifesaving rings, although few of us would have actually thrown one to a person crying for help. But in life however, there will always be situations where someone will be calling out for urgent help.
There is a difference between someone wanting general help or assistance and the person calling for help because they could drown or they are in some other life-threatening situation. That call is different to any other… it is a call of total desperation.
I recall an incident on a road trip between Adelaide and Melbourne. We had stopped for a rest break when I heard someone calling for help. The location was a small quiet town adjacent to a railway line with few people around. The call for help seemed to be coming from a group of stationary railway freight trucks. I walked across…. and found a worker on the ground injured. Fortunately, we were able to contact a local Ambulance Officer who came and soon had the man’s injured leg in an air splint and was ready to transport him to hospital.
When we call for help in the extremity of a personal situation it is so reassuring to know someone has heard us and is coming.
One of the most comforting things in the Christian life is the fact that when we are in a serious personal situation, we can and should call on God for help and He will respond. At that point of need our tear-filled cry for help touches the heart of God.
Yet, the most important cry for help is when a person calls on the Lord Jesus Christ to save them… He hears and He will save!
