I’m reminded of a phrase used when people get exasperated and they might say, “what in heavens name are you doing”. Of course it is a form of swearing, and we are reminded not to take the Lord’s Name or heavens Name in vain.
Today the taking of various names in vain is common usage… and God’s Name is used often. I recall a time in my young teenage years when I took the Name of Jesus in vain. I was with my father at the time and when he heard me, I got a very severe reprimand.
As we live life, we discover famous people whose names become etched in our memories. politicians, scientists, musicians… the list goes on. They all leave their mark on history and names are remembered, but their lives duly come to an end. and so does what they do!
The name of Jesus Christ however is not a static name lost to history… it is a name which lives on and never loses its power.
The Lord Jesus taught his disciples that they could use his Name and expect results, (John 14:14). It was not a lifeless name then, nor is it today… he is with God the Father, the living Son of God and ready to respond to our call.
There is no other Name given under heaven which will save us. If we dare to call on the Name of Jesus Christ, He will save us!
After Jesus had ascended into heaven his followers used and called on the Name of Jesus as though it had some miraculous power. Well, that’s the truth… it was a Name that worked mightily. People got saved, healed and set free!
So, what’s in a Name? Isn’t it strange… every day we use people’s names to get their attention. Jesus is alive… call on his Name!
